P-KB3!! and all about Chess.

7 03 2008

I’ve studied enough of those notations in my PE2 subject, which happened to be nothing but a game of logic: chess.

Of course I’ll venture first on my glorious days: I was an impressive chess player when I was ten years old. Thanks to my Dad for giving me a book which features the moves of Eugene Torre – it fed me enough knowledge to strangle all my opponents in one deafening thud of my rook. Well, maybe I’m way advanced than my ten-year old opponents since they haven’t got any chess book. But then I’m very proud to know all those Queen’s Gambit and Sicilian Defense and those kind of chess stuff.

Then I took a chess class this semester.

One thing that surprised me is that the notations used to record chess moves have changed, which made my ‘Eugene Torre learnings’ obsolete (since it’s published with old notations of P-KB3 and N-QB3 instead of the latest e4 or Ng6, and the fact that I’ve lost it through the years). Which means that my professor’s telling me right on my face that I’m one ancient chessplayer. No way!

Another thing, I haven’t had much experience from playing Chess ever since Counterstrike was made. My prowess has decreased greatly, and my glorious thuds were either muffled by my uncertainty or an impending defeat. The swift swings of my hand as I put my knight on its proper place and a bang of the wooden piece and the wooden chessboard was gone.

I’m nothing but a shrinking self-imposed grandmaster between these gigantic teeth my classmates were. I’m nothing but dirt.

Anyway, my usual Friday Freedom was stripped off by that Chess Tournament between four chess sections in UPLB. It literally swallowed my freedom with its 9-5:30 schedule. WTF? I almost thought of drowning on my seat with that chess-playing frenzy we’re very much obliged to have. Just so you know, we are required to win at least ONE out of FIVE grueling games of chess to pass the subject.

Anyayahan and Avinante overthrown me not because they’re god-like in playing the indoor game, but it’s because I’m too dumb to oversee their attacks. However, I won over Campos and Manalaysay, giving me two points out of five. After my two-point contentment, I told my professor I’m too lazy to have my fifth match so I bagged my Certificate of joining the tournament, and left the Chess room with sweat beads on my forehead.

What’s disappointing is that – I won over Campos and Manalaysay BY DEFAULT. Though I thank them for giving me two points in an instant by leaving the goddam event since they got their points, I should have at least gain my pride by fighting with them. And, if fortunate, WIN those matches!

Still, I felt good that I got two points so I didn’t need to take the Finals (yes, even PE subjects conduct Final exams).

So two subjects down: my Animal Science laboratory class and my Chess class. Now I can feel the semester ending! YES!

I’m not good chess player. I suck at chess! Lol. Anyway, my younger brother is a good player. Lol. He told me once that he won a game against a high school student (he’s still in grade school). I just don’t know if it’s true. Lol.

All I know about Chess are the moves. Nothing more, noting less. Lol.
